Excursion “Chamber of Icons” (RUS)

The icon room – this is the name of the exhibition that introduces one of the most interesting collections of the Narva Museum’s art collection. The exhibition presents icons from the 17th century to the beginning of the 20th century, which have reached the museum through very different paths. Here are the icons confiscated by the customs, which were taken at the Narva customs point when they tried to illegally cross the border; icons evacuated from Narva to Rakverre during the Second World War and sacred objects that were saved from destruction during the Soviet era.

A special feature of the exposition is that outstanding examples of icon art and rare iconography stand side by side with simpler icons that were created far from the large icon painting centers. Such icons have a special value today and are usually found in private collections. The cast icons and crosses, which were made in the Old Believers’ workshops and decorated with enamel, as well as the large two-sided altar cross, the like of which could be found in Estonian Orthodox churches in the last quarter of the 19th century, deserve special attention.

We invite you to look at icons from a cultural and historical perspective as well as from an art-scientific point of view.

The tour is conducted by Yuliia Khlystun (PhD).

The tour of the “Icon Chamber” exhibition is in Russian.
