LECTURE Old Testament women in art / Rebekah and Rutt: faithfulness, choice and the path to blessing
Rebekah and Ruth are one of the brightest and most morally meaningful female characters in the Old Testament. Their stories may seem without external drama, but they are filled with deep content. These women embody the Old Testament moral ideal and have been a role model for their people throughout the centuries.
In the lecture, we will talk about how the destinies of Rebekah and Ruti unfold through faithfulness, conscious choice and willingness to sacrifice. Their actions not only affect the course of personal life, but also the course of sacred history, becoming a path of blessing for the family, the clan, and the entire nation.
Let's look at how the Christian tradition has interpreted the figures of Rebekah and Ruth and what emphases artists have created when approaching these plots. Special attention is paid to artistic interpretations in painting, book miniatures and iconography, where the idea of moral choice is conveyed through gesture, gaze and composition. The lecture helps to understand why the images of Rebekah and Ruth have maintained their relevance throughout the centuries.
