Old Testament women in art – beauty, taking risks and saving the nation: Ester (RUS)
The stories of the Old Testament often tell how the fate of one person changes the course of the history of an entire nation. One of the most prominent of them is the journey of Esther – the rise of a Judaizer from an orphan to the queen of Persia and the salvation of her people.
In the lecture, we will talk about how theologians and artists have interpreted the image of Esther, in which beauty, courage and willingness to take risks were intertwined. We also talk about the mysterious Queen of Sheba: did she really exist and why did she become one of the most popular figures in European art. We pay special attention to how artists have depicted the importance, wealth and wisdom of the Queen of Sheba, turning biblical stories into visual images.
The lecture helps to understand how art tells the stories of women of the Old Testament about choices, risks and rescues, which are still relevant today.
