Lea Teeääre introduces herself:
I was born on 15 October 1958 in the village of Liiva, near Toila. I have lived in Jõhvi and have had a long-standing connection with Toila. Toila Beach is a place filled with memories from my childhood and later school holidays. Summer days on Toila's rocky shore, the scent of the sea, the wind, and the water playing in the foam of the waves have always remained in my heart.
Perhaps it was these earliest memories of the sea and nature that taught me to notice places, moments, and moods worth preserving.
I attended basic school in Jõhvi and spent three years studying at Jõhvi Children's Art School. My educational journey then took me to Tallinn Construction and Mechanical Engineering Technical School to study architecture. I continued studying the same field at Tallinn University of Applied Sciences and Tallinn University of Technology.
Art, however, has always been part of my life. For several decades, I have been involved in porcelain painting and ceramics at the CDE Applied Arts Society.
My architectural education and many years of working in spatial planning have taught me to observe the relationships between space, form, and the surrounding natural environment, and to pay attention to colours, light, and fleeting moments.
Whenever I travel or spend time away from home, my sketchbook is always within reach. Some places invite me to pause, certain qualities of light remain in my memory, and some moments simply ask to be captured on paper or shaped in clay and porcelain.
Walking along the familiar paths of Toila once again, I felt a desire to share the impressions I had gathered over the years. And so this exhibition was born — a kind of travel diary expressed through art.
These works preserve the places I have seen, the memories, emotions, and moments that hold special meaning for me. Perhaps the most important question is not why Toila in particular, but rather what kind of lasting impression a place can leave within a person.
