Concert "Bach vs Handel"

18.03.2025

29 March, at 15:00 and 18:00

Narva Town Hall

At the last weekend in March, an exciting musical duel between the works of two titanic composers will be presented to the audience of East-Viru County by the Narva Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Anatoly Shchura and the internationally renowned soloists countertenor Ivo Posti, oboist Anastasiia Cherniak and violinist Liam Keneally.

340 years ago, in March 1685, Johann Sebastian Bach, the descendant of seven generations of musicians, and George Frideric Handel, the son of the court surgeon, were born in the neighbouring princedom of central Germany. They were two geniuses whose musical legacy became the brightest peak of high Baroque.  The composers never met in their lifetimes, but in „BACH vs Handel“ their operatic, oratorio and orchestral masterpieces will compete.

The concert’s programme  includes Handel's arias from his famous oratorio Messiah and the operas Giulio Cesare and Alcina, Bach's arias from the Mass and the Christmas Oratorio, as well as his concerto for oboe, violin and orchestra and one of his four orchestral suites.

„BACH vs HÄNDEL" is on Saturday 29 March at 15.00 and 18.00 in Narva Town Hall and on Sunday 30 March in the cultural centres of Sillamäe (14.00) and Kohtla-Järve (17.00).

TICKET INFO: ticket price €10. Tickets can be purchased in Narva Culture House "Rugodiv" and in Narva Tourist Information Centre in the Town Hall (cash only), in Sillamäe Cultural Centre and in Kohtla-Järve Cultural Centre one hour before the concert.

The project is supported by the Ida-Viru County Expert Group.
