GLORIANA’S JIGG

Baroque ensemble LaBande: Helis Naeris (mezzo-soprano), Melissa Jõesaar-Koel (baroque violin, viola da gamba), Tõnu Jõesaar (viola da gamba), Kristiina Are (harpsichord).

The programme will feature music from the time of Queen Elizabeth I of England.

Queen Elizabeth I of England (1533-1603) was popularly nicknamed Gloriana after the destruction of Spain's Invincible Armada, Europe's largest navy, in 1588, which made second-rank England one of the most powerful countries in Europe.

Who was the fearless woman who ruled England for forty-five years in a society where important decisions were made by men? How did she manage to keep peace in England and achieve economic and cultural prosperity when every day of her personal life was threatened by treachery, a knife or a poisoned chalice? The period of her reign is called the golden age of English culture, the fruits of which humanity still enjoys today. Our concert programme includes the works of some of the most brilliant masters of words and sound from that era: William Shakespeare, Ben Johnson, John Dowland, William Byrd, Thomas Campion.

The baroque ensemble LaBande has been active since 2016. Since the day it was founded, the ensemble has included mezzo-soprano Helis Naeris, baroque violinist Melissa Jõesaar and pianist Kristiina Are. In 2022, viola da gamba and baroque cello soloist Tõnu Jõesaar joined the ensemble.

The ensemble's name LaBande [laba:nd] reflects its playfulness on the one hand, and on the other, it pays deep homage to one of the pioneering baroque ensembles of the 20th century, La Petite Bande and the Kuijken brothers. Translated literally, la bande in French simply means a group of people with a common purpose.

The ensemble's repertoire includes both secular and sacred vocal music, as well as solo and chamber works from the 17th and first half of the 18th centuries from all over Europe. French baroque music is particularly close to our hearts. More recently, we have also delved more into English and Italian repertoire. Our programmes are mostly built around a single idea or image, with the most beautiful examples of poetry being the most important in the selection of songs.

TICKETS 7/5 EUR from the FIENTA and at the door.

Admission for children up to 18 years, people with special needs and persons accompanying them is FREE.

The concert is supported by: Cultural Endowment of Estonia (Eesti Kultuurkapital).
